Why I’m taking a social media break for the rest of the year and the beginning of 2021…

It’s been a very difficult year for many of us: mentally, personally, and financially and I’ve had more screen time this year than I would normally. Thankfully, I have been able to continue to support my clients and welcomed on board some new ones during 2020.

I am looking forward to taking a break during the last week of December and the first week in January to relax, recharge and get ready for 2021.

My Digital Detox Plans for 2021…

1. Business

I will be focusing on three key areas: completing client work before the break, finalising goal setting for 2021 and booking some training courses. My professional and personal development have always been important, but 2021 will be the year that I gain some additional qualifications that were put on the back burner. January sees the start of a very busy month: many clients have booked time with me to go over their own business goals and projects they would like to go ahead with. The diary is also filling up fast for February onwards.

2. Fitness

As many of you know (if you follow me on Twitter) fitness is a major part of my life. I enjoy running 5k every other day and working with my personal trainer Carol either at the gym or outdoors. This regime will continue and I will get back to the gym once restrictions can be lifted. In the meantime, it will be a mixture of running and either Zoom or track sessions with @CarolMeechanPT to maintain my fitness focus.

3. Wellness

As part of my 2021 Digital Detox plan, I will be continuing to take care of my physical and mental wellbeing. Eating more healthily, drinking more water, practising self-care with reiki and meditation, and not working 12-14 hour days in the business! Definitely more me time required.

4. Personal Development

Do you journal? I’m planning to keep track using my Best Self Co planner and journal. I will be undertaking a digital declutter on my phone and devices too – getting rid of any apps that are not essential – and turning off notifications. Screen time will be strictly limited. There will also be more appreciation and gratitude for everything in my life. I have been working with a wonderful Life Coach during 2020, who has provided clarity and direction and will continue with this in 2021.

Do you think you could do a digital detox too?

Even if you can’t live without your phone or your iPad, it’s always good to rethink your boundaries – maybe you are too available? Do you always answer every text, WhatsApp or email instantly? Do you stay up late and endlessly scroll through social media while in bed? If, like many people this year, you’ve found your sleep patterns affected, switching off your phone an hour or so before you go to bed may help insomnia.

Here’s hoping for a better digital/life balance in 2021 – and a healthier and happier life all round.
